Other Resident Benefits
Vacation: Residents receive four weeks of vacation per year. Vacations times are set prior to the academic year and accommodated based on request. They may be taken in two-week blocks in the PGY-1 year and in one, two or four week blocks in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. PGY-1’s receive an additional 1 week break of unpaid leave between first and second year.
Education funds:Educational Fund Reimbursement for professional and educational activities is allotted as follows:
PGY-1 – Discretionary, PGY-2 & PGY-3: $750.00 annually. Expenses incurred for books for educational directed learning, conference registration/ travel, educational expenses related to elective, medical equipment, apps for electronic devices with approval from the program director. In addition, categorical residents receive the MedStudy in the PGY-1 year. Throughout all three years, categorical residents receive an iPad Mini for education purposes, ACP-ASIM membership, which includes a subscription to the Annals of Internal Medicine and ACP Journal Club. The program also provides all residents with a subscription to Up-To-Date.
Medical Information Resources: All residents are given free at-home access to all on-line library services including the UIC Medical Library On-Line, UpToDate, MD Consult, Harrison's On-Line, Medline, PubMed and Ovid Full-Text Journals.
Sick Leave: Residents are allowed 24 calendar days of sick leave per year, accruable only within the current residency program. Sick leave may be used for illness, injury, or to obtain medical or dental treatment for the resident, spouse, or child.
Health and Disability Insurance: Residents receive comprehensive health care coverage that includes dental care. Residents may choose any insurance plan offered by the University of Illinois. Individual coverage is subject to a nominal monthly charge. Residents may elect to cover immediate family members as well. Resident coverage is effective on the first day of employment. It is imperative that healthcare coverage is present if not obtained through the University of Illinois.
Disability insurance is provided at no cost to the resident. Life insurance coverage equivalent to one year’s stipend is also provided to the resident at no cost.
Malpractice Insurance: All full-time residents are covered at 100% for any and all malpractice claims.
Moonlighting: PGY-3 residents on non-admitting rotations are eligible to moonlight. Available shifts include general medicine wards on Saturday 7PM to 7AM, MICU on Friday and Saturday from 7PM to 7AM and NCCU all nights from 7PM to 7AM. All moonlighters must have an active permanent IL medical license, controlled substance license, DEA and be in good academic standing.
