Scholarly Activities

Scholarly activity at Advocate Christ encompasses more than just simple research. Our program focuses on teaching and building the foundational knowledge of research modalities and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process through dedicated lectures and one-on-one faculty support. Additionally, residents will be guided in writing and submitting review articles, case reports, and abstracts to nationally respected journals and conferences. Regardless of experience level, our residents have countless opportunities to get assistance and mentorship from well-published faculty members, our dedicated research chief resident, and an on-site statistician. Finally, our program encourages the pursuit of all types of scholarly activity by providing residents with possible research electives, both at ACMC and other outside institutions.

Research and IRB

Engaging in research is frequently intimidating. Those that are interested will be paired with a mentor to help develop and nurture their ideas. Residents of all levels of experience that want to pursue a project will be assisted by the research chief resident in the IRB writing process. In addition, all residents will have the collaboration of our on site statistician to help in the statistical data analysis.

Case Reports and Abstract Presentations

Located on the South-Side of Chicago amongst  a diverse economic and demographic population, our institution offers residents a unique opportunity to see an incredibly wide-range of pathology. From the commonplace to the exceedingly rare, our residents take advantage of this clinical variety by publishing many of the interesting cases that come through our hospital in national journals and conferences. With clear faculty direction and mentorship, residents can quickly become experts in abstract submissions, oral vignettes, and poster presentations.

Full-Length, Peer-Reviewed Publications

The final step in the publication process is translating an abstract to a full-length, peer reviewed manuscript. Our chief residents, faculty, statisticians, and Internal Medicine Research Director
(Dr. Chaiban) work with residents throughout the writing, submission, and review processes.

Review Articles and Book Chapters

We are fortunate to have numerous well-published faculty to help aid in our scholarly activity. Frequently members of our faculty are invited by respected journals and book editors to write review articles and chapters on particular topics. This offers a wonderful opportunity for residents to step into the world of academic literature. It allows our residents to  gain an understanding of the peer review process,  while creating helpful professional contacts and improving their own portfolio.

Conferences

Our residents have been exceedingly active in presenting both posters and clinical vignettes at regional, national, and international conferences. We are extremely proud of the intellectual curiosity and investigative spirit that continues to flourish here at Advocate Christ Medical Center. Some of the past conferences include:
