Hospitalist MedicineThe traditional residency training in Internal Medicine was designed to develop physicians who would either pursue fellowship subspecialty training or a career in general Internal Medicine. In recent years, hospitalist medicine as a career choice has taken center stage in an effort to meet the deep changes in hospital-based healthcare delivery. While a fellowship in Hospitalist Medicine is offered by some programs, ABIM does not recognize it as subspecialty training and offers an option for Focused Practice. As a result, most of the current Internal Medicine trainees contemplating a career in Hospital Medicine choose to enter the hospitalist workforce immediately after residency training. As a result of the growing demand for hospitalists and growing interest in the field, our residency program has put together a number of training opportunities and didactics that will make interested residents more confident and prepared to start a career as a hospitalist as well as more attractive candidates for employment.
